A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
